Today I’d like to praise the poets that guide us through the darkest places; the unmanageable grief dissected by language. The emptiness filled by an image of itself. I want to praise the poem doused in the humor that is so often hard for me to find. My unrecognizable laugh that breaks against the ceiling and falls at my feet to remind me that, once again, this morning, because I woke up, I am lucky. My father-in-law is suffering from stage four cancer, and eight days ago he was given 2-5 days to live. So let us praise each stolen day spent flanked by family and friends and lovers and even those who trouble us with their doubt. Ask yourself: What would you write today if you thought you would not have to defend it tomorrow? What terrible joy would you admit to? What stifled love would you return to the wild?
